प्रिय आई,  सात सप्टेंबर 2024 ला तुला जाऊन पन्नास वर्षे झाली. असा एकही दिवस नाही की तुझी आठवण आली नाही. भाऊने तुझ्याबद्दल आणि तुझ्या शेवटच्या दिवसाच्या आठवणी सांगितल्या, त्यानंतर ही मला म्हणाली, की तुम्ही आपल्या आठवणी जरूर लिहून सगळ्यांना सांगा. सुरुवात कुठून करावी आणि पुढे कसे जावे, हा मोठा प्रश्न आहे. सगळ्यात जुनी आठवण म्हणजे मालाडला खिडकीत भाऊचे दप्तर अडकवण्याच्या नादात पडून मला पायाला झालेल्या जखमा आणि त्यावर तू खंबीरपणे मला डॉक्टर कडे नेऊन नंतर घेतलेली काळजी. त्यानंतर जोगेश्वरीच्या बिल्डिंग मधील शेजाऱ्यांकडून तू शिकलेले सिंधी प्रकार पदार्थ. तिथे ऐकलेली ओम जगदीश हरे ही आरती. आंबोलीला असताना तू मला पायी मॉन्टेसरीला घेऊन जायचीस तेव्हाचे रेल्वे क्रॉसिंग. नशिराबादला असताना मला होणारा उन्हाळ्यांचा त्रास आणि त्याची काळजी. लहानपणी हट्टीपणा केल्यावर हात पकडून चटका देऊ का अशी धमकवणारी तू. कुसुम आत्या किंवा नाना काकाच्या लग्नात खूप खेळल्यावर माझे पाय दुखू लागले तेव्हा कार्यालयात माझ्या पायांना रॉकेल चोळणारी तू. होस्टेलमध्ये भूक लागली तर काही पौष्टिक खायला असावे म्हणून डिंकाच्या लाडू चे मि...

Today everybody is aware of OTT, YouTube, Netflix, Hotstar and so many other apps that provide streaming services. People discuss about different Webseries and await for new content. From toddler to old people eyes of everyone are glued to mobile, TV or Laptop screen. People who go for walking or cycling have streaming music from their mobile to accompany them. This wasn't the scenario earlier. In our childhood electricity was not available in all households. Houses with power supply used to have radio set. Post department used to charge annual license fee for the radio set. These radio sets were mostly imported and had electrical valves for operation. Radio set used to be made of wood to give good sound quality. The radio set required a large antenna for capturing radio waves. The antenna used to be made of thin wire mesh. Only medium wave and short wave transmission was available. Akashvani (All India Radio), BBC and Voice of America were popular channels for news and events. Run...

In our childhood, the Indian Railways operated three types of passenger train services for long distances. The first was Passenger train that stopped at all stations including Flag stations. The second was Express trains with limited number of stops with higher speed than a passenger train. The third was Mail train, a train with separate coach for Posts. These coaches were operated jointly by Railways and Indian Posts department. This service was called Railway Mail Service or RMS. Every mail train had a RMS coach which was positioned in such a way that it would stop infront of the RMS office at the station.  On the internet very little information is available about Indian RMS which is one of the oldest service available in the world. East India company had started postal coach service in India in 18th century for official work. आजही ५० वर्षांनंतर शाळेतील इंग्रजी भाषेचा तास आठवतो. शिक्षकांचा तर्खडकर भाषांतरमालेवरचा विश्वास आणि अट्टाहास अजून लक्षात आहे. त्यामुळे व्याकरण निश्चितच पक्के झाले. शब्दोच्चार आणि त्यावरुन केलेली टिंगल आजही सर्वांना लक्षात आहे.  काही जण रेन मार्टिन पण वापरायचे. आज भारतातील बाकी प्रांतात आणि परदेशी लोकांबरोबर काम केल्यावर आपल्या शिक्षकांचा अट्टाहास किती चुकीचा होता ते कळते.  इंग्रजी भाषेतील फ्रेंच शब्दांचे उच्चार आता फ्रेंच नुसार होतात. एन्व्हलप आता ऑन्व्हलप आहे. एंटरप्राइज चे आंतरप्राईझ झाले. रेस्टॉरंट चे रेस्तराँ , हॉटेल चे होटल असे किती तरी शब्द आहेत. फक्त महाराष्ट्रात च्युसडे बाकी जगभर ट्युस्डे, एज्युकेशन चे एड्युकेशन. लेफ्टनंट , कर्नल फक्त भारतात बाकी देशात उच्चार वेगळे होतात. मीटिंग मध्ये किंवा स्टेजवरून बोलताना आपण कुठल्या शहरात आहोत याचे भान ठेवून उच्चार बदलावे लागतात. श्येडुल चा उच्चार स्केड्युल करावा लागतो. फिक्स्ड चे फिक्सेड करावे लागते.  हेच लोक काय बोलत आहेत हे लक्षात येण्यासाठी ते कुठुन आले हे जाणून घेणे आवश्यक होते. गुजराती प्रोग्राम चा पोग्राम करतात.  त...

पुरुष आणि घरकाम सर्वसाधारणपणे नोकरी/ व्यवसाय करुन पैसे कमावणे हे पुरुषांचे कार्यक्षेत्र किंवा कर्तव्य आणि घर सांभाळून मुलांचे संगोपन ही स्रियांची जबाबदारी अशी भावना समाजात असते. पुर्वी लग्नासाठी मुलगी पहाताना तिला स्वयंपाक येणे आवश्यक असे, त्याच बरोबर विणकाम भरतकाम वगैरे काही येते का हा हमखास प्रश्न असे. संगीत, गायन येत असेल तर दुधात साखर समजायचे. या उलट पुरुषांना घरकाम येणे अपेक्षित नव्हते. त्यामुळे उच्चविद्याविभूषित स्त्रीकडूनही लोकांची अपेक्षा असते की तीने ऑफिस मधून थकून घरी आल्यावर किचनमध्ये उत्साहाने स्वयंपाक करावा. एकत्र कुटुंबात पुरुषांना स्वयंपाकघरात जाण्याची गरज नव्हती. नोकरी निमित्त कोणी एकटाच बाहेरगावी गेला तर खानावळीवर किंवा घरगुती जेवणाच्या डब्यावर दिवस काढावे लागत. परिस्थिती चांगली असेल तर घरीच स्वयंपाकी ठेवत असत. ज्यांना दोन्ही पर्याय परवडत नसत किंवा उपलब्ध नसत ते स्वतःच स्वयंपाक करत. माझ्या ओळखीचे काही दाक्षिणात्य लोक ५० वर्षांपूर्वी पंजाब आणि उत्तर भारतात बदली झाल्यानंतर स्वत:च स्वयंपाक करत कारण त्यांच्या आवडीचे अन्न मिळत नसे. नंतर कंपनीने मेसची परवानगी आणि सबसिडी द...

Films  Me and Montage My first recollection of a movie is  “Hum Panchhi Ek Daal Ke” with the title song with same words. This film was released in 1957. Another movie was Bhabhi also released in 1957 with famous song “Chal ud jaa re Panchhi”. The songs are now also dear to me. That was Bombay. We lived in Jogeshwari and most of the film stars used to pass the road in front of our building. My father, a Police officer was transferred to Nashirabad in East Khandesh district now Jalgaon. It was a village and there was no entertainment other than a movie theatre. Electricity was not there and Gas batti was the brightest light source. That was a time when families of government officials were not expected to mingle with local population. Father was  busy so mother would take us to watch movie in the only theatre there.
